The 1852 Banda Sea earthquake (November 26, 1852) is a textbook example of a “Direct Hit” within our model. This event occurred on the exact day of the Syzygy and within the primary latitude band of influence. It caused violent shaking lasting five minutes, and was assigned XI on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale in the Maluku Islands.[2] A tsunami measuring up to 8 m (26 ft) slammed into the islands of Banda Neira, Saparua, Haruku and Ceram. The tsunami caused major damage, washing away many villages, ships, and residents. At least 60 people were killed in the earthquake and tsunami.
Event Profile: November 26, 1852
- Magnitude: Estimated M 8.4 to 8.8. It is one of the largest historical earthquakes in the Indonesian region.
- Impact: Generated a massive tsunami (up to 8 meters) in the Banda Islands.
- Mechanism: Complex subduction and strike-slip motion where the Australian and Eurasian plates converge.
The Role of Stress: Our calculated Radial Stress (6.32 kPa) and Coulomb Stress (3.79 kPa) are lower than those of the 1839 Martinique event. However, the Banda Sea is one of the most tectonically active areas on Earth. Because the background tectonic stress is already extremely high, it requires a smaller “nudge” (lower kPa) from tidal forces to trigger a rupture compared to an intraplate zone like Arkansas.
Perfect Timing: The earthquake struck on November 26, matching the Syzygy Time perfectly. In the absence of “Super TSW” boosters (no Mars, Venus, Perigee, or Perihelion), the earthquake seems to have relied on the pure, direct tidal peak of the Syzygy.
Inside the TSB: * Banda Sea Latitude: approx 6.5 S.
TSB Lower Boundary: 3.9 N.
While the Banda Sea is technically just a few degrees south of our “Lower Latitude” boundary (3.9 N), it sits well within the high-gradient shear zone created by a Sublunar Latitude of 18.9 N.
The Indonesian Arc was our top-listed target fault, and it produced a nearly M9 event right on schedule. This reinforces the idea that while planetary alignments expand the reach of the window, the lunar Syzygy remains the primary clock for the most active plate boundaries.
